Background

The concept of active parenting is partially based upon the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs (Scheve, n.d.). Active parents, who tend to focus on behaviors, are most concerned about raising responsible children. This is a somewhat balanced approach for parents who try to stay abreast of new trends and integrate them in their parenting style. These parents are very different from the book of the month parents who never seem to find the right fit for their parenting approach. These parents differ in that they utilize some of the new research and trends that are available but don’t allow that information to become an obstacle for them to achieve their focus in rearing their children. These parents tend to take a proactive approach and do not wait for problems to occur but will look to cut them off before they occur. Active parents are always looking for new research to assist them in the many new challenges that arise with the changing times.

They might also be described as:

Proactive
